In 2021, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen opened their new Depot, an art storage facility which is open to the public and sheds new light on the museum’s collection through additional programming.

In 2022, the Depot will host the new exhibition series Le Miroir Vivant, annually inviting an international artist to make use of the Depot’s exhibition space, collection and expertise to create and present new work. The artist may choose to create something new or combine their work with objects from the collection. Le Miroir Vivant will present four exhibitions in the Depot between 2022 and 2025.

In 2021, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra appointed Pierre Audi as its first-ever Artistic Curator. This position was established with the aim of contributing to the never-ending evolution of classical music. During a three-year appointment, the Artistic Curator develops musical projects that transcend the traditional programming, in collaboration with international partners. The aim of the curatorship is to ground classical music in the present day and expand the artistic profile of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Eye Film Museum presents film and video art in a state-of-the-art exhibition space, taking up a pioneering role in the international field.

In the period of 2022-2025, Ammodo supports one Eye exhibition per year featuring video art by prominent artists. 2022 will see a showcase of the last three Eye Art & Film Prize winners: Meriem Bennani (2019), Khalil Joseph (2020) and the Karrabing Film Collective (2021).

Manifesta is a nomadic biennial of contemporary art taking place in a different European city every other year. The fifteenth edition lands in Barcelona, a city where European, national and regional identities merge. Manifesta will investigate these dynamics through artistic interventions in collaboration with locals.

Ammodo supports the production of new artworks for Manifesta 15.

ITA is a venue for cutting-edge theatre and dance. Its in-house theatre ensemble is celebrated internationally. Led by artistic director Ivo van Hove, the company brings inventive and modern interpretations of classic and contemporary repertoire. ITA also regularly invites foreign directors for co-productions.

In 2019, Ammodo and ITA entered a partnership for the period of 2020-2022. This partnership has been extended for 2023-2025. Every year, Ammodo supports at least three productions: one by the ITA ensemble and two international co-productions.

Walter Immerzeel researches climate change in mountainous regions in Asia and its consequences for the availability of water for the millions of people living downstream. Immerzeel was the first to map the water cycle in the high mountains of the Himalayas. Over the next few years, he aims to understand thoroughly how natural disasters in mountain areas are related to their location and extreme weather, focusing on landslides, avalanches and glacial lakes.

Louis Vermeulen studies how derailments in the genetic material of stem cells can cause colon cancer. In doing so, he focuses specifically on the earliest development of tumors. He combines biochemistry and genetics with mathematical and physical models to map the dynamics of stem cells. With his innovative approach, he has made a major contribution to fundamental concepts within molecular oncology.

The Nexus Institute creates space for critical thinking by organising conferences, lectures and masterclasses and publishing essays. At the annual Nexus Conference, prominent contemporary thinkers discuss topics around democracy, science, art and civilisation. Important intellectuals who have joined these debates include Nobel Prize Laureates Amartya Sen, Wole Soyinka and Mario Vargas Llosa, philosophers Jürgen Habermas and Avishai Margalit, and authors Marilynne Robinson and J.M. Coetzee.

Ammodo supports the annual Nexus Conference to contribute to a high-level discourse on the big questions of life.

Every other year, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra selects four young conductors to participate in its Conducting Masterclass. This trajectory gives them the rare opportunity to work with the renowned Concertgebouw Orchestra and learn from an acclaimed conductor. This constitutes a huge step in their artistic development.

Ammodo has supported the Conducting Masterclass since its establishment in 2015. In 2022, the four participants will rehearse with the orchestra under the supervision of conductor Fabio Luisi.

Julidans is an international contemporary dance festival taking place in Amsterdam every July. The festival presents dance performances by established and upcoming filmmakers. Since 2017, it also co-produces new works by mid-career choreographers with the aim of contributing to the evolution of dance and strengthening international collaborations. In many cases, the resulting performances mark a first step into larger venues for their creators.

Between 2019 and 2021, Ammodo supported one international Julidans co-production per year. This support has been continued for the period 2022-2024 and expanded to include a second co-production each year. In 2022, one of the supported productions is by Greek choreographer Christos Papadopoulos.

Manifesta is a nomadic biennial of contemporary art taking place in a different European city every other year. The fourteenth edition lands in Prishtina, Kosovo, and carries the title it matters what worlds world worlds: how to tell stories otherwise. Catherine Nichols was appointed as Creative Mediator.

Prishtina is a rapidly developing city where East meets West. Manifesta wants to induce political and social engagement through art and aims to create a lasting impact on the cultural infrastructure of the city. To achieve this, a permanent contemporary art centre will be realised.

Ammodo supports the production of new artworks for Manifesta 14.

Rivke Jaffe conducts research on urban space and everyday urban life. She has published on topics including crime and citizenship in Jamaica, the popular culture of illegality, and public-private security arrangements. Jaffe explores how technologies that are supposed to lead to increased security – such as guns, barbed wire, cameras and algorithms, but also animals such as police dogs – can simultaneously reproduce or increase social inequality.

Lisa Herzog analyses how moral and democratic norms can play a greater role in our economic system. What does it mean to act morally when employees feel like small cogs in the wheel of a large organisation? Herzog explores socially relevant issues such as these, always looking at the economic system from a philosophical perspective.

Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ is a concert hall in Amsterdam specialised in contemporary music. In order to push the development of new music, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ commissions new pieces by Dutch and international musicians and composers. Ammodo has supported these commissions since 2013.

As of 2023, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ will initiate two to three large-scale international (co-)productions per year.

The Academy is the training institute of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchesta in Amsterdam. During a season-long trajectory, promising young musicians hone their skills by participating in orchestra productions, receiving individual guidance and following masterclasses, workshops and training sessions. After participating, the musicians often take on positions in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra or other prominent orchestras in Europe.

By supporting the Academy, Ammodo aims to contribute to the growth of a new generation of musicians.

Contemporary art centre De Appel in Amsterdam presents multiple exhibitions per year. 1994 saw the launch of its Curatorial Programme, aimed at providing upcoming curators with the skills needed to create excellent art exhibitions.

Ammodo supported De Appel’s Curatorial Programme between 2013 and 2019. This support has been continued for the period 2022-2024, in which the programme will be enriched with new elements.

Frascati is a theatre company that gives new directing talent ample space to push the limits of the medium. It also holds a crucial position in the international theatre field by contributing to international co-productions and by being a member of two European theatre networks. To foster this international function, Ammodo supports the theatre’s New Frontiers programme. As part of this new programme, Frascati will realise three international co-productions as well as three productions by international Netherlands-based directors between 2022 and 2024.

Patricia Dankers designs, synthesizes, and investigates synthetic biomaterials that can control, mimic or even surpass complex biological processes in the human body. Using intelligent chemistry ageing or damaged tissue can be repaired. It is part due to her fundamental research that heart valves and vascular grafts made of synthetic biodegradable biomaterials exist, as well as synthetic hydrogels for the culture of stem cells.

Floris de Lange studies how human perception arises from neurobiological processes in the brain. By measuring brain activity very precisely, he determines how information “flows” through the brain. Among other things, he has shown that our brain works like a prediction machine, actively using everything it learns to predict the future. Recently, De Lange has been studying why curiosity and surprise are important to the brain.
