De Exoot (Tropical Healing) is a coproduction of De Warme Winkel and Joachim Robbrecht from Showmachine. Similar as in his previous production, The Great Warmachine, director Joachim Robbrecht uses an contemporary European theme as subject. The ambiguous attitude concerning other cultures is the main theme in De Exoot (Tropical Healing). Robbrecht and De Warme Winkel go back to the colonial past. The support of Ammodo is aimed at contributing to the development of Robbrecht and De Warme Winkel.

Theatre of the World is an opera by Louis Andriessen, directed by Pierre Audi. The opera is inspired by the life of the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680). It follows Kircher, who makes a journey through time and space accompanied by a twelve year old boy. The production was accompanied musically by ASKO | Schönberg under the direction of Reinbert de Leeuw. Ammodo supports Theatre of the world to contribute to the development of contemporary opera.

6: THE SQUARE

NBprojects realises projects of the choreographer and curator Nicole Beutler. For the performances 6: THE SQUARE and 7: TRYPTICHON Beutler was inspired by the geometric principles of the Bauhaus: circular, square and triangular shapes form a substantive theme. 6: THE SQUARE (2016) is concerned with the square and in 7: TRYPTICHON (2017) Beutler moves on to the triangle/the trinity. Beutler’s work explores the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk as a conception of art in which different disciplines such as architecture, design and theater are intertwined. Ammodo supports 6: THE SQUARE and 7: TRYPTICHON to contribute to the development of Nicole Beutler who, with these performances, is taking the plunge as a choreographer into the world of larger halls and theatres.

The theatreshow Husbands and wives is based on the eponymous Woody Allen film from 1992. Performed by Toneelgroep Amsterdam and directed by Australian director Simon Stone (1984), Husbands and wives brings the reality of romance, with all its defects, to light. Ammodo supports Husbands and wives to contribute to the artistic development of Simon Stone, as well as the realisation of a new repertoire for Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Each year Toneelschuur Productions offers a select group of directors and theater artists the opportunity to further develop their talent through individual counseling by means of the programme House for Talent. The development of talent, professionalism and increasing involvement of audiences development are central to the programme. Participating makers include Paul Knieriem, Michiel de Regt, Erik Whien and Joost van Hezik. Ammodo supports Toneelschuur because House for Talent promotes the flow of directors and producers/playwrights to the big companies and thus contributes to the development of talented directors and theater makers.

SPRING is a festival that encourages and presents contemporary artistic developments in the field of crossovers between dance, performance and theater. In May 2016 SPRING presents eight new (co)productions of new work by Jan Martens, Nicole Beutler and Tim Etchells, amongst others. In the series, a balance is sought between young and ‘established’ innovators with both small and larger productions. Ammodo is supporting SPRING over the period 2016-2018 to contribute to the realisation of new international (co)productions.

Het Concertgebouw is organising the festival Turning East from the 20th until the 25th of November 2017, with music from the Middle-East and the Maghreb-countries. Turning East will present jazz, pop and classical music developed within Arab, Kurdish and Persian traditions. The programme also includes work by Mohammed Fairouz, the new composer in residence of Het Concertgebouw.  Ammodo supports Turning East to contribute to the development and exposure of music from the Middle-East in Het Concertgebouw.

I will wait for you is a contemporary dance production from Arno Schuitemaker. This production will be performed by Revé Terborg, Jenia Kasatkina and Stein Fluijt. The public spectators will be moved by the slow, evolving movements, that are brought together with sound and lights. The performance isn’t parted in different scenes, which emphasizes the loss of awareness of time. In 2016 the Dutch National Opera presents the new opera production Only the sound remains. Only the sound remains is directed by the renowned American director Peter Sellars (1957) and consists of two parts, which are based on Japanese Noh dramas. The central theme of these pieces is the encounter between the living and the dead, between humans and spirits, the earthly and the heavenly. The music is composed by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. Ammodo supports Only the sound remains to contribute to the development of contemporary opera.

Die Fremden by NTGent, directed by Johan Simons, is a multidisciplinary music theatre production which was developed in cooperation with the ensemble Asko | Schönberg. Die Fremden is a co-production with the Ruhrtriennale and the Rotterdam Schouwburg and will première in Marl in September 2016. It is based on the novel The Stranger (1942) by Albert Camus, the recently published novel The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud (written in response to Camus’ book) and Submission in which Michel Houellebecq pictures a radical change in the political and cultural climate in the France of 2022. The cast includes Pierre Bokma and Elsie de Brauw. The visual artist Aernout Mik is creating new work for this production. Ammodo supports Die Fremden in order to contribute to the development of high quality international music theatre.

Crashtest Ibsen: ik zie spoken, directed by Sarah Moeremans (1979), is the third of the four-part Crashtest Ibsen series, based on pieces by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The first two performances Crashtest Ibsen: Nora and Crashtest Ibsen: Volksvijand were presented in 2013 and 2014. In Crashtest Ibsen: ik zie spoken the neurotic urge of man to want to control everything is exposed. Joachim Robbrecht has written an adaptation of Ibsen’s Ghosts (1881) for this production. Ammodo supports Crashtest Ibsen: ik zie spoken to contribute to both the artistic development of Sarah Moeremans and to the creation of a high-quality theater production.

Through the Fraslab programme Frascati offers theater makers and/or dance artists at the start of their careers the opportunity to develop new work. Twice a year, four people have the opportunity to produce a work of about 45 minutes and then to present it to an audience of professionals. For Fraslab, Frascati focuses on creators who want to extend the boundaries of their profession and discipline. In addition, Frascati organises the Frascati Sessions. In these sessions, participants have the opportunity to exchange knowledge, experience and working methods with experienced artists and leading thinkers. Ammodo supports Fraslab and the Frascati Sessions because both initiatives stimulate research within the performing arts and contribute to the development of talented theater and dance makers.

Triology Ruhrtriënnale

Each year between 2015 and 2017 Toneelgroep Amsterdam led by Ivo van Hove are developing one new production, which is then shown on the Ruhrtriennale. The new productions are based on the eponymous novels by Louis Couperus. The text is edited by Eric de Vroedt. The trilogy comprises De Stille kracht, Van oude mensen, De dingen die voorbijgaan and De boeken der kleine zielen. Ammodo supports Trilogy from Toneelgroep Amsterdam as a contribution to the creation of new plays and also to the development and international visibility of Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Showmachine was set up by writer, director and performer Joachim Robbrecht (1979). The Great Warmachine, a production directed by Joachim Robbrecht, explores the obviousness of peace in relation to the historical formation and current state of Europe. To this end Robbrecht has developed an artistic strategy called ‘Theatre of War’ in which he invites the viewer to experience war as a ritual and play. By supporting The Great Warmachine Ammodo aims to contribute to the development of the production itself and the artistic development of Joachim Robbrecht.

The co-production 2666 by French director Julien Gosselin and his company Si vous pouviez lécher  mon coeur is a large-scale musical montage performance, based on the novel of the same name by Chilean author Roberto Bolaño. According to Gosselin himself, he is engaged by the innovative and confrontational way Bolaño addresses the issue of violence and the historical relationship between Europe and South America. The production 2666 can be seen from May 2017 in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. Ammodo supports 2666 to contribute to the artistic development of Julien Gosselin.

Tomoko Mukaiyama (1963) is a Dutch-Japanese pianist, performer and visual artist based in Amsterdam. For the performance La Mode Tomoko works together with nine dancers from the Spellbound Contemporary Ballet (Rome), architect Toyo Ito and composer Yannis Kyriakides. La Mode puts fashion, music, dance, performance, video, light and spatial design on an equal footing. Ammodo supports La Mode to contribute to both the development of Tomoko Mukaiyama and to enable the creation of a new international installation performance of the highest quality.

At the invitation of the Ruhrtriënnale (Germany) and the Ghent music center, De Bijloke (Belgium) Silbersee is making a contemporary international operatic theater work, Homo Instrumentalis. The show is directed by Romain Bischoff (1961) and is a transdisciplinary co-production intergrating song, dance, text, light and video art. The piece is inspired by the theme of the relationship between humans and technology, approached from a historical and philosophical perspective. Ammodo supports Homo Instrumentalis to contribute to the development of quality contemporary operatic theater.

The Dutch National Opera organises a development programme for young artists with the potential to be successful in the world of opera. The programme was developed because it became apparent that young opera singers, directors, conductors, theater designers, coaches & repetiteurs and dramatists have difficulty in connecting with professionals in the field after completing their training. The programme includes workshops and a series of six operatic productions were performed in the period 2014-2016. The programme looks to further the development of young talent and to encourage the participants to establish themselves at an international level in the future. Ammodo supports this programme from the National Opera to make a contribution to the development of young opera talent.

Blank Out is the new operatic production from composer-director Michel van der Aa. It is a composition for a ‘real’ soprano and a virtual baritone. The opera examines the human condition in a combination of live action, interactive 3D film and music. The performance premieres in 2016 during the Opera Forward Festival. Blank Out pushes the dramatic possibilities of opera by fully integrating technological resources in the theatrical performance. The project is a continuation of the technological innovation that Van der Aa applied in his film opera Sunken Garden (2011-2012), amongst other projects. Ammodo supports Blank Out to contribute to the creation of new work and the artistic development of Michel van der Aa.

Fraslab

Through the Fraslab programme Frascati offers theater makers and/or dance artists at the start of their careers the opportunity to develop new work. Twice a year, four people have the opportunity to produce a work of about 45 minutes and then to present it to an audience of professionals. For Fraslab, Frascati focuses on creators who want to extend the boundaries of their profession and discipline. In addition, Frascati organises the Frascati Sessions. In these sessions, participants have the opportunity to exchange knowledge, experience and working methods with experienced artists and leading thinkers. Ammodo supports Fraslab and the Frascati Sessions because both initiatives stimulate research within the performing arts and contribute to the development of talented theater and dance makers.

AMMODO ✕ The Dutch National Opera
2014 - 2016

The Dutch National Opera organises a development programme for young artists with the potential to be successful in the world of opera. The programme was developed because it became apparent that young opera singers, directors, conductors, theater designers, coaches & repetiteurs and dramatists have difficulty in connecting with professionals in the field after completing their training. The programme includes workshops and a series of six operatic productions were performed in the period 2014-2016. The programme looks to further the development of young talent and to encourage the participants to establish themselves at an international level in the future. Ammodo supports this programme from the National Opera to make a contribution to the development of young opera talent.

AMMODO ✕ SPRING Performing Arts Festival
2016 - 2018

SPRING is a festival that encourages and presents contemporary artistic developments in the field of crossovers between dance, performance and theater. In May 2016 SPRING presents eight new (co)productions of new work by Jan Martens, Nicole Beutler and Tim Etchells, amongst others. In the series, a balance is sought between young and ‘established’ innovators with both small and larger productions. Ammodo is supporting SPRING over the period 2016-2018 to contribute to the realisation of new international (co)productions.

Triology Ruhrtriënnale
AMMODO ✕ Toneelgroep Amsterdam
September 2015 - present

Each year between 2015 and 2017 Toneelgroep Amsterdam led by Ivo van Hove are developing one new production, which is then shown on the Ruhrtriennale. The new productions are based on the eponymous novels by Louis Couperus. The text is edited by Eric de Vroedt. The trilogy comprises De Stille kracht, Van oude mensen, De dingen die voorbijgaan and De boeken der kleine zielen. Ammodo supports Trilogy from Toneelgroep Amsterdam as a contribution to the creation of new plays and also to the development and international visibility of Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Blank Out
AMMODO ✕ Michel van der Aa
20 - 25 March 2016

Blank Out is the new operatic production from composer-director Michel van der Aa. It is a composition for a ‘real’ soprano and a virtual baritone. The opera examines the human condition in a combination of live action, interactive 3D film and music. The performance premieres in 2016 during the Opera Forward Festival. Blank Out pushes the dramatic possibilities of opera by fully integrating technological resources in the theatrical performance. The project is a continuation of the technological innovation that Van der Aa applied in his film opera Sunken Garden (2011-2012), amongst other projects. Ammodo supports Blank Out to contribute to the creation of new work and the artistic development of Michel van der Aa.
